The 8 best surfing apps

surfing apps

A board and the waves are sometimes all you need to enjoy the thrill of surfing. As we live in the age of the internet, the majority of us have smartphones replete with apps that are designed to help improve our lives on a daily basis. This extends to surfing apps, from forecasting wave size to obtaining tide information.

Like surfing exercises, picking the best surfing apps to install on your phone can be challenging. You only have so much space on your phone, and some apps won't make the grade. Here are 8 of the finest surfing apps on the market today.

1. Magic Seaweed

Magic Seaweed provides surf forecasts for thousands of spots around the world. This company covers a wide range of surf spots, so you'll really struggle to find one not covered. All the key data points on surfing are included, including waves, swells, tides, water temperatures, and wind speed and direction.

Additionally, they provide a handy star rating system, which has become a benchmark within the global surf community. It’s fair to say that MSW punches above its weight within the surf world. The app is available on both iOS and Android and is free.

3. Surftrackr

You'll love this app if you're a surfer who likes to document every surf session! SurfTrackr is an app that lets you record and track all kinds of surf session data to your heart's content.

Add a surfboard and your location to start. Then note your surf sessions, including the date, time, length, height, and rating of the waves, along with any other swell notes you wish to record.

SurfTrackr's basic version is free, or you can upgrade to SurfTrackr Pro to add photos,  additional surfboards, and automatic weather. Viewing charts and stats is also an option, as well as exporting your data to then print out and hang on your wall.

4. Dawn Patrol

Count your waves, know your speed and even forecast the tide. This is perfect for Apple Watch wearers as it gives you fully comprehensive data, right from your wrist! View the locations of your surfs and beat your personal records. 5. Nobodysurf

NobodySurf lets you watch over 9,000 videos of incredible clips filmed by surfers and videographers. If you can't go out to the water on a given day, this surfing app is an excellent alternative. You live vicariously through the surfers in the videos on the app. You'll never have to miss your surfing fix again - just kick back and enjoy the action directly from your phone. Nobodysurf is available on both iOS and Android.

6. Endangered Waves

The Endangered Waves app (launched December 2017) was created by Save the Waves Coalition to encourage and empower surfers to monitor the health of their coastlines. With Endangered Waves, surfers and ocean-lovers have the opportunity to become more involved in ocean and coastal conservation and impact their communities in a positive way.

You just snap a photo, choose a "threat category" that describes the issue, and it automatically posts. For example, if you observe an oil spill, eroding coastline, sewage, trash, etc. on the beach, you just snap a picture.

Geotagging and global sharing are included in this service. Save the Waves will receive your report and alert the proper groups to assist with the issue. It is hoped that this valuable data will help scientists, local NGOs, and government agencies combat major issues facing our oceans.

7. World Surf League (WSL)

World Surf League is the app that broadcasts all professional surfing competitions. You can keep track of your favorite athletes, receive event alerts and even watch competitions live!

The inability to follow all of the competitions around the world is one of the biggest challenges for surfers and surfing fans alike. It is absolutely invaluable to be able to watch everything live right from your phone. The World Surf League app is available for iOS and Android.
